"Little Me,” A Big Milestone

Exciting news!

Today, July 17, 2025, marks 49 years since fourteen-year-old me left Jamaica, West Indies, for New York City—filled with hope, nerves, and wide-eyed wonder. I can still recall every detail of that Saturday afternoon: my grandmother’s embrace, the tearful airport goodbye, the terror of flying, believing I was headed for streets paved with gold. Instead, I found myself navigating a new world full of hardship: poverty, abuse, abandonment, bullying, and religious constraints so rigid they bordered on the cult-like, leaving little room for self-expression or individuality.

Yet every hardship contained a lesson.

  • Difficult people taught me to cherish kindness.

  • Losing my voice showed me the urgency and power of speaking up—not just for myself, but for others.

  • Mistakes became stepping stones—showing me that growth often lurks inside our toughest moments.

  • Being underestimated taught me the quiet power of perseverance.

  • Being cast aside revealed a strength I never knew I had—and the beautiful truth that even at rock bottom, hope and healing are possible.

Through it all, music was my anchor, my outlet, my safe space.

Long before I became the adult version of me that some of you know, I was a young girl scribbling lyrics in notebooks, singing quietly and sometimes very loudly—much to the chagrin of my sisters. Singing offered me a comfort that nothing else could—a way to tell my story, to release all that troubled me.

After my memoir, These Broken Roads (2023), found its way into readers’ hands and hearts, I was moved by how many shared their own childhood stories—echoes of courage, pain, and renewal. Their stories inspired me to write “Little Me” as a musical keepsake; a love letter to the girl who survived so much, and to the younger selves we all carry within us.

“Little Me” is more than a song—it’s a gentle embrace for every inner child, a reminder that our stories aren’t just about struggle but about the resilience that allows us to dream again.

When you hear “Little Me,” I hope it resonates with you and inspires you to believe that:

  • The setbacks that once seemed insurmountable can become your springboards.

  • Sometimes, what feels like a delay is just the tension before you launch into new heights—your own catapult mode.

  • Uniqueness, even when it sets you apart, is never a flaw. It’s your superpower.

  • Compassion, born from hardship, is a light we can pass along to others on their journeys.

I invite you to reflect: Who is your “Little Me”? What would you tell your younger self, given the chance? I’d love for you to share your story in the comments or send me a message.

Our journeys are unique, but our humanity and the need to connect are the same. No matter what anyone told you, you have always been—and always will be—worthy, whole, and needed in this world.

“Little Me” will be available soon on most major streaming platforms, including iTunes, Spotify, YouTube Music, and many more.

Thank you, Rockstars, for letting me share my heart through music and words. Stay tuned for the official release of “Little Me”—a song, a story, and a celebration of becoming.

With love and gratitude,

Donna Marie
